Beth Townsend, Founder of Healing Traditions

Beth Townsend created Healing Traditions in the spirit of bridging the many teachings, traditions, and techniques she has encountered over a journey of more than 35 years. Today, her work is rooted in the The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy ® & Spiritual Healing and is supported by her lifelong learning across cultures and practices.

In 2016, Beth became the fifth person formally trained as an advanced instructor of The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy ® & Spiritual Healing. In addition to supporting her own clients, Beth now also teaches fellow practitioners who want to share these special, time-honored techniques with their clients.

Beth with Rosita Arvigo, D.N.

Beth’s journey began in 1974, when she was first introduced to complimentary therapies, meditation and natural healing practices. For 18 years she also worked in Non-Invasive Cardiology Services specializing in Cardiac Ultrasound and Peripheral Vascular Studies. She later completed massage school and went on to design and teach a curriculum in medical massage therapy, whole food nutrition, and herbal therapies.

Craniosacral therapy caught Beth’s attention as she searched for natural approaches to heal from injuries sustained in a MVA. She found the benefits for overall health for adults, infants and children.

Most recently Beth’s training has expanded to include The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy ® & Spiritual Healing. This has become a centerpiece of Healing Traditions, as the techniques reflect many of Beth’s passions: a practice rooted in ancient traditions and supported by Western science, a focus on women’s health, and a method that emphasizes self-care, so clients learn to listen to and nurture their bodies. Beth has done extensive training with the Arvigo Institute incorporating techniques promoting wellness for women (pre-puberty through menopause) and their families. She became a Certified Trainer in 2012, and in 2016, she became the fifth person to complete training to become an Advanced Instructor.

A lifelong student, Beth has been certified in The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy ® & Spiritual Healing, CranioSacral Therapy, Medical Massage/Manual Therapy, LLLT and Scenar Therapy, Brain Gym, Touch for Health, Herbal Therapy & Whole Food Nutrition, Essential Oils and Flower Essences, Reiki (Usui and Karuna). She is also a Licensed Massage Therapist.

Beth practices the meditative and healing techniques and rituals from several traditions that include Mayan, Native American, Tibetan and Yoruba. Sometimes these traditions are reflected overtly in her work, such as in the Arvigo techniques, and other times it is their essence that guides Beth as she works with clients.

Beth has mastered the practice, clinically and as an instructor, of the Usui and Karuna Reiki. She is a study group leader for Sweet Medicine SunDance Teachings. She hosts the teachers of the Tara Dhatu regularly and studies the healing practices and philosophies of Ifa.

Beth is keenly aware of and honors the unique traditions we bring to our personal journeys. Her work is done in the spirit of being a bridge between traditions, and she meets clients wherever they are on that bridge. Each person’s situation, interests, and comfort level will be thoughtfully considered as she works with you to develop a treatment plan.

Over more than 30 years, Beth has apprenticed, studied, practiced, and taught with a number of elders and experienced practitioners. She has led workshops, presentations, and trainings across the United States and internationally.

Beth believes teaching and healing go hand in hand. Her experience and traditions tell her that “fixing” people’s pain is not a true path to growth and goodness. What matters is gentle guidance and compassionate teaching, so you can face your physical or spiritual challenge and learn practical ways to manage or overcome it. Even when Beth is working on a client’s body, she is still working with the client to teach them how to nurture themselves.

Beth regularly offers public workshops, group lectures and presentations, trainings for practitioners, and other teaching sessions. These can also be customized if you are planning a special gathering, are interested in a particular tradition or technique, and/or if you would like to address a specific population or issue (e.g., children, women, infertility).

Additionally, Beth is available to work one-on-one  in the following areas, with individuals who are seeking to deepen their knowledge and practice:

  • Identity & Energy Awareness
  • The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy ® & Spiritual Healing – Certified Trainer
